The Phensic share their take on the Ska Resurgence with "DCxPC Live Vol. 23"

The Phensic, hailing from New York/New Jersey, are setting the stage on fire with their latest album, "DCxPC Live Vol. 23." Created by a collection of ska enthusiasts deeply rooted in the genre's rich history, this release resonates with the soulful vibes and dance-worthy rhythms that define ska's essence. There's not a lot in our world right now that inspires a smile, let alone dancing, but in all honesty, I've been smiling since I pressed play on this one.

One of the standout qualities of The Phensic is their near mastery of their instruments. From Robert Julian's intricate guitar work to Pamela Anderson's mesmerizing Hammond Organ and Piano melodies, or the fact that Greg Behan and Marc Wasserman set up a bunk bed in the pocket, every note is a testament to their musical prowess. The triple vocalist talents of Roger Apollon Jr. (lead), Honeychild Coleman, and Meg Howe add layers of richness to their sound, creating a harmonious blend that lifts each track to new heights.

"DCxPC Live Vol. 23" is a testament to the band's dedication to ska's core while infusing elements of punk, soul (and neo-soul), indie rock, and dub. It's not just a ska release, but it plays like a cross between the Selector, the Interrupters, and the Dap-Kings. Tracks like "Don’t Test Me," "War Inside," and "Intersection" showcase The Phensic's ability to craft infectious rhythms that compel listeners to move and groove. I feel like lead vocalist Roger Apollon, Jr. especially would be just as at home belting out D'Angelo-esque neo-soul as much as Gregory Isaacs level lovers' rock.

The lead single, "War Inside," delves into introspective themes with powerful lyrics that resonate deeply. It's a solid encapsulation of the band's ability to blend thought-provoking messages with irresistible melodies.

I take shots at you,

you take shots at me

There’s no place left to hide

To tend the wounds that we cannot see

There’s a war inside of you

There’s a war inside of me

The battles that we fight

Just go on so constantly

While this album marks a departure from the live audience recordings typical of DCxPC Live releases, the clarity and tightness of the recording allow listeners to immerse themselves fully in The Phensic's energetic performance. But still...one can only imagine the electrifying experience of witnessing these tracks live in a crowded venue, where the music's infectious energy would ignite the dance floor.

The Phensic's commitment to bringing soulful vibes back to the American ska scene is evident in every track of "DCxPC Live Vol. 23." It's a celebration of musical joy, camaraderie, and the timeless appeal of ska. Go on...let yourself smile a bit. Just start there.
